Walking and fetch

Walking gear is a fit problem before it is a brand problem: the harness is sized on the chest, the lead on how close the dog has to be, and the clip on the ring it has to hold. This category covers the parts that go out of the door.

Two decisions cover most walks. The first is where the lead attaches: a ring at the chest gives a point of contact in front of the dog, a ring on the back suits a relaxed walk, and a harness with both covers the pavement and the field. The second is length: a short lead for streets, a long line for open ground, and a second handle for the moment a dog has to come in close.

Hardware ages before webbing does. Welded rings outlast split rings, a coated clip loses its coating and then snags the webbing, and reflective stitching is worth checking on a lead used after dark. Fetch gear belongs to the same trip: a launcher throws further than a hand and picks the ball up off the ground so nobody has to stoop.

What actually decides a purchase here

  • Girth measurement against the size chart: the harness is sized on the chest, not the neck.
  • Where the lead attaches: chest ring, back ring, or a harness that offers both.
  • Lead length against the walk: pavement, park or open ground.
  • Metal quality and the parts that can be bought again: rings, clips, webbing.

Our picks in this category

A dog wearing a padded harness on a walk

Walking and fetch

Ruffwear front-clip harness, medium

A padded harness with a metal ring at the chest and a second ring on the back.

Best for
Dogs who lean into a flat collar on daily walks, and owners who walk the same route twice a day.
Watch out for
A chest strap that sits too low can rub behind the front legs; measure the girth rather than the neck.

Play and home

Chuckit! ball launcher, standard

A plastic arm that throws a ball further than a hand and picks it up off the ground.

Best for
Fetch in a park or a large garden, and owners who throw for a long time.
Watch out for
Launcher and balls are matched by size; a mismatched ball sits loose in the cup and drops early.
